Royal Oak home explosion victim identified; faulty gas line possible cause

DETROIT — The victim of a deadly and massive explosion that obliterated a Royal Oak home about 5 p.m. Wednesday has been identified as 58-year-old Daniel Malczynski.

Malczynski was alone in the home and no other serious injuries have been reported.

"First and foremost, our thoughts are with the deceased individual’s family, friends and loved ones," utility provider Consumers Energy said in a statement Thursday. "

Preliminary testing has determined that a gas service line to the house was damaged and was the possible cause of the explosion.

"However, the investigation is continuing under the supervision of the Michigan Public Service Commission. Consumers Energy is in the process of testing other gas services in the vicinity of the incident and is committed to assuring all of its facilities are safe and intact before restoring gas service to the area."
