U.S. motorcycle-related deaths up 4.3% in 2012's first 9 months

By David Shepardson
Detroit News Washington Bureau

Washington — Motorcycle deaths are rising nationwide, up at least 4.3 percent in the first nine months of 2012 as Michigan reported the third-highest number of increased rider deaths.

The Governors Highway Safety Association said in a report being released Wednesday that record-high temperatures last spring helped boost motorcycle deaths in 34 of 50 states. In the first three months of 2012, motorcycle deaths jumped 24 percent.

Motorcycle deaths have more than doubled nationally from 1997 to 2011, from 2,116 top 4,612, while overall traffic fatalities fell in the same period by 23 percent from 42,013 to 32,367. The group is projecting that motorcycle deaths will top 5,000 in 2012 and will account for more than 14 percent of all traffic deaths, the highest-ever percentage of total road deaths.

Michigan reported the third-highest number of increased motorcycle deaths.

At least 10 hurt in crash involving DDOT bus

By Tom Greenwood and Mark Hicks
The Detroit News

Detroit — At least 10 people suffered minor injuries in a crash involving a Ford Taurus and a Detroit Department of Transportation bus Wednesday morning on the city's west side.

Detroit police said the incident occurred about 9 a.m. at the intersection of Evergreen and Van Buren roads.

The Taurus ran a stop sign and collided with the bus, Officer Cassandra Lewis said. The impact forced the bus onto the front lawn of a home, clipping a tree as it careened off the road. The front end of the bus was heavily damaged.

The Taurus was spun around by the collision but stayed on the roadway. Its driver was taken to a hospital for injuries, but the extent was not known.

Leon Gollman, who lives on Evergreen, said he was sitting in his den when "I heard some crunching and it felt like it was getting closer and closer to me."

Moments later, the bus was in the yard — only feet away from the home he has lived in for two months. "When I looked out the window, I could see the bus driver holding his head," Gollman said.

About a dozen passengers left the bus, looking dazed and shaken, he said. At least half of them were taken away later for medical treatment.

The force of the crash dented a tree in an adjacent yard and knocked out a bus window, Gollman said.

Although he had heard of other accidents in the area, the collision was "unbelievable," Gollman said. "You would never imagine something like this happening."

An investigation into the crash is continuing.

Groups call for mandatory helmet law, citing rise in injuries

Lawmaker who led last year's repeal dismisses their claims

Lansing — Insurers and medical groups urged Gov. Rick Snyder and the Legislature to reinstate Michigan's motorcycle helmet requirement Wednesday, citing a University of Michigan study showing it would have prevented 26 deaths and 49 injuries last year.

The study by researcher Carol Flannigan of U-M's Transportation Research Institute analyzed crash data from 2012, the first year Michigan cyclists were allowed to ride without protective helmets under legislation signed by Snyder on April 13. Michigan joined 30 other states that make helmets optional for motorcycle riders.

"The experiment is over in Michigan," said AAA Michigan representative Heather Drake. "Helmets save lives."

$1.425 million Settlement: Anesthetists, surgeons at odds over need for hysterectomy

Plaintiff asserts efforts to resuscitate bleeding mom were too little and too late

In a medical negligence case, damages were sought for the wrongful death of a mother who died during a C-section delivery. During the surgery, just before cutting into the uterus, the surgeon noted abnormal blood vessels overlying the uterus, which raised his suspicion for placenta accreta, a condition that can cause the mother to bleed excessively upon delivery of the fetus. When the baby was delivered, the mother suffered a massive bleed. Discovery revealed that after the bleed, extra anesthesia and surgical help was summoned; blood and blood products were ordered but some were not given; blood warmers were not immediately available; and that the anesthetists were at odds with the surgeons as to the need for hysterectomy to stop the bleeding.
The mother died during the eventual hysterectomy about an hour after the delivery.
Plaintiff argued that the resuscitation efforts were too little and too late, and that that special precautions such as ordering blood and blood products; ensuring blood warmers were in place; and obtaining back-up surgical assistance could and should have been taken, as delivery was not emergent. No such precautions were taken.

Type of action: Medical negligence
