Lead Poisoning Linked to Poor Grades in Detroit Schools

(DETROIT) -- Detroit has some of the highest levels of lead poisoning among children in the nation. A recent study in the Detroit Public Schools found that increased lead poisoning in a child's blood increases the likelihood of that child receiving lower test scores.

Detroit's high rate of lead poisoning is due in part to the city's older homes.

According to the Detroit Free Press, the study looked at blood tests and standardized test scores for over 21,000 students in Detroit Public Schools.

According to the study, children with 2 to 5 micrograms per deciliter were 33% more likely to perform poorly on tests. Students with over 5 micrograms per deciliter were 50% more likely to perform poorly.

The Center for Disease Control's level of concern for lead poisoning is 5 micrograms per deciliter.

A 2010 report found that out of 39,199 Detroit students, only 23 did not have lead in their systems.

Motorist dies from head-on collision with garbage truck in Pontiac

Pontiac — A 25-year-old Maybee man died Friday afternoon after being involved in a head-on collision with a garbage truck, according to the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.

Witnesses told deputies that about 2:41 p.m. Friday, the man's 1994 black Jeep Cherokee was seen speeding along northbound Joslyn Road near Upland Avenue just before he lost control and swerved into southbound lanes.

The man crashed directly into a southbound garbage truck, causing both vehicles to wind up on the front lawn of a home on the 1500 block of Joslyn.

Waterford Township firefighters extricated the man who was rushed to McLaren Hospital and later transferred to Royal Oak Beaumont, where he died. His name hasn't been released.

The 41-year-old garbage truck driver suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Deputies say it's unknown whether the man who died was wearing a seat belt; however, alcohol is not believed to be a factor. The crash remains under investigation.

Diclofenac Used and Recommended Globally, Despite Cardiovascular Risks

Feb. 12, 2013 — A study in this week's PLOS Medicine finds that the painkiller diclofenac (a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) in the same class as aspirin) is the most commonly used NSAID in the 15 countries studied and is included in the essential medicines lists of 74 low-, middle- and high-income countries, despite its known tendency to cause heart attacks and strokes in vulnerable patients. This risk is almost identical to that of Vioxx (rofecoxib), which was withdrawn from worldwide sales in 2004 because of cardiovascular risk. Researchers writing in this week's PLOS Medicine call for diclofenac to be removed from national essential medicines lists and to have its global marketing authorisations revoked.

Suffocation, Entrapment Risks Prompt Recall of PeaPod Travel Tents by KidCo

By The CPSC / February 9, 2013
Consumers Businesses

Consumers should stop using this product unless otherwise instructed. It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.

PeaPod and PeaPod Plus Travel Beds

Infants and young children can roll off the edge of the inflatable air mattress, become entrapped between the mattress and the fabric sides of the tent, and suffocate.

KidCo toll-free at (855) 847-8600, 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. CT Monday through Friday or visit the firm’s website at www.kidco.com to receive the free repair kit.

Infants and young children can roll off the edge of the inflatable air mattress, become entrapped between the mattress and the fabric sides of the tent, and suffocate.

CPSC is aware of a death of a 5-month-old boy in December 2011 in New York, New York, who was found with his face pressed against the side wall of the tent. The cause of death was not determined.

In addition, CPSC is aware of six reports and Health Canada is aware of three reports of children who became entrapped or experienced physical distress in the product. Two of the six reports included infants who were found crying underneath of the mattress that had not been inserted into the zippered pocket on the bottom of the tent.

The KidCo PeaPod Travel Beds and PeaPod Plus Travel Beds are small, portable sleep tents marketed for use by infants from birth to 3+ years, depending on the model. The tents have a zippered side for putting in and taking out the child and have an inflatable air mattress that fits into a zippered pocket underneath the floor of the tent. The tents fold into a compact round shape and come with a fabric bag for storage and transport.

The following models and corresponding tent fabric colors are included in this recall:

The model number can be found on a small tag on the underside of the product.

The travel tents were made in China and sold at independent juvenile specialty stores nationwide and online at Amazon.com from January 2005 through the present for between $70 and $100.

Consumers should immediately stop using the tents and contact KidCo to get a free repair kit. Upon receiving the repair kit, consumers should immediately install the new mattress and support brackets (the kit for the P100 model does not include brackets). New instructions and warning labels for all models advises parents that the PeaPod should only be used with children who are 1 year of age or older. To ensure that the tents are made safer, all consumers who own a recalled model should order the repair kit. Contact KidCo toll-free at (855) 847-8600 between 8:30 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. CT Monday through Friday or visit the firm’s website at www.kidco.com to receive the kit.

Editorial: Communities should avoid breed-specific dog bans

By The Detroit News

Communities wishing to clamp down on vicious dogs by banning specific breeds are probably barking up the wrong tree.

Animal rights groups argue if a community wants to consider such regulations, the proposals should be generalized, such as a dangerous animal or a generic dangerous dog ordinance. We agree.

Kevin Hatman, a spokesman for the Michigan Humane Society, says his group opposes bans on specific breeds, such as pit bulls.

"They usually just punish responsible pet owners," Hatman says.

Waterford Township, which has adamantly defended its breed-specific ordinance since 1990, is reconsidering its tough stance.

Supervisor Gary Wall says township officials need time to study the issue.

He says the ordinance, which specifically bans pit bulls, has come under fire recently at township board meetings.

Editorial: Broken EMS system endangers Detroiters

Poor management, inadequate maintenance of emergency medical services puts lives at risk; fixing it is a public safety issue

In Detroit, injured individuals are often taken to the hospital not in ambulances or other properly equipped emergency vehicles but in police patrol cars and Fire Department trucks. It happens too frequently in the city, especially when considering the life and death situations often involved. Why? Because an EMS unit was not available. Emergency medical is a basic public safety service the city must provide its residents.

Kalamazoo College student from West Bloomfield Twp. dies after bacterial meningitis diagnosis

Kalamazoo — A sophomore at Kalamazoo College has died after being diagnosed with bacterial meningitis and at least 120 people are getting antibiotic treatment as a precaution, officials said.

Emily Stillman, 19, of West Bloomfield Township, died Sunday due to complications from the infection after being taken to a hospital early Friday, the school said in a statement. Her funeral is Tuesday at The Dorfman Chapel in Farmington Hills.

Meningitis is an infection of the fluid that surrounds a person's spinal cord and the brain. No additional cases of bacterial meningitis have been reported, the school said, and those in close contact with Stillman were urged to get antibiotic treatment.

Health officials said the likelihood of additional cases at Kalamazoo College is low.

About 350 students, faculty, and staff at the southwestern Michigan school gathered in Stetson Chapel on Sunday to remember Stillman. Some wrote messages to her on lanterns made out of paper bags and candles, and placed them on and around a bench.
