Byetta And Januvia: Possible Increased Risk Of Pancreatitis, Pancreatic Cancer, And Thyroid Cancer

FDA Drug Safety Communication: FDA investigating reports of possible increased risk of pancreatitis and pre-cancerous findings of the pancreas from incretin mimetic drugs for type 2 diabetes

[3-14-2013] The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is evaluating unpublished new findings by a group of academic researchers that suggest an increased risk of pancreatitis, or inflammation of the pancreas, and pre-cancerous cellular changes called pancreatic duct metaplasia in patients with type 2 diabetes treated with a class of drugs called incretin mimetics. These findings were based on examination of a small number of pancreatic tissue specimens taken from patients after they died from unspecified causes. FDA has asked the researchers to provide the methodology used to collect and study these specimens and to provide the tissue samples so the Agency can further investigate potential pancreatic toxicity associated with the incretin mimetics.

Drugs in the incretin mimetic class include exenatide (Byetta, Bydureon), liraglutide (Victoza), sitagliptin (Januvia, Janumet, Janumet XR, Juvisync), saxagliptin (Onglyza, Kombiglyze XR), alogliptin (Nesina, Kazano, Oseni), and linagliptin (Tradjenta, Jentadueto). These drugs work by mimicking the incretin hormones that the body usually produces naturally to stimulate the release of insulin in response to a meal. They are used along with diet and exercise to lower blood sugar in adults with type 2 diabetes.

FDA has not reached any new conclusions about safety risks with incretin mimetic drugs. This early communication is intended only to inform the public and health care professionals that the Agency intends to obtain and evaluate this new information. FDA will communicate its final conclusions and recommendations when its review is complete or when the Agency has additional information to report. Read the full FDA report here.

March is Brain Injury Awareness Month

Written by Shirley Wheatland and Matthew Harris

The brain is the "executive" of the body and controls all functions, including speaking, thinking, moving, swallowing and breathing. It receives messages, interprets them initiates and monitors responses.

There are two categories of brain injuries: congenital — before or during birth — and acquired— after birth. Brain damage can occur suddenly through trauma, lack of oxygen to the brain or stroke, or more gradually through diseases or tumors.

Brain injuries are as individual as the people who are injured. The short- and long-term effects of a brain injury vary widely depending on the cause, location of the injury, and severity. Understanding a person's personality and cognitive abilities before the injury is vital toward understanding what changes have occurred after the injury. read more....

50 Years of Poison Prevention Efforts Result in Lives Saved; Emerging, Toxic Hazards Still Lurk in Many Homes

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) celebrates the nation’s longest running public health campaign: National Poison Prevention Week (NPPW), from March 17 to 23, 2013. As a longtime supporter of NPPW, one of the CPSC’s greatest contributions to the effort has been the requirement of child-resistant closures on certain medicines and household chemicals.

When NPPW was launched more than 50 years ago, about 400 children a year died from unintentional poisoning. The most common culprit: aspirin. Today, about 40 children a year die from unintentional poisoning. Although this demonstrates significant progress, CPSC believes that is still too many, which is why the agency continues to identify and address new and recurring poison dangers.

“During National Poison Prevention Week, we celebrate the tremendous success of this public safety campaign,” said CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum. “There are still children who need to be protected from household poisoning, so we must not let our guard down.  Products that pose a toxic risk to children need to be locked up and put away from their reach.”

Michigan motorcycle fatalities rise

Deaths jump 18% in first year since state allowed bikers to ride without helmets, statistics show

Washington — Traffic deaths in Michigan rose 5.3 percent in 2012, while motorcycle deaths jumped 18 percent in the first year since Michigan allowed bikers to ride without a helmet, statistics show.

The number of riders killed without a helmet went from five in 2011 — less than 5 percent of all deaths — to 55, or just under 43 percent, in 2012, the Michigan State Police reported Monday. In April, Michigan became the 31st state to allow motorcycle riders the option of riding without a helmet if they met certain criteria.

Government officials and studies have repeatedly found that motorcycle deaths rise after a state allows riders to not wear helmets.

National Highway Traffic Safety Administration chief David Strickland said in an interview last year he hoped Michigan would still encourage riders to wear helmets. "Every state that has repealed their mandatory helmet law has unfortunately seen a requisite increase in fatalities in motorcycle crashes," Strickland said.

Asbestos Mesothelioma Risk Increased By Other Fibers

From Survivingmesothelioma.com
Posted on Sunday, March 17, 2013.

Asbestos is a fibrous mineral mined and used for decades in products ranging from insulation to cement, floor and ceiling tiles, adhesives, and friction products. It has been more than forty years since scientists confirmed the link between asbestos and malignant pleural mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer of the lining around the lungs and its use is now heavily regulated in the U.S. In recent years, another mineral called erionite, has also been implicated in mesothelioma cases.

Now, a study conducted in France suggests that two other types of mineral particles used in industry may increase the risk of mesothelioma, particularly in people who are also exposed to asbestos. Researchers in Bordeaux, France compared the cases of 1,199 male industrial workers with mesothelioma with 2,370 healthy industrial workers, paying close attention to each worker’s level of exposure to asbestos, mineral wool and silica.

Ouch: Dog bite reports jump 28 percent in Genesee County

By Ron Fonger mlive.com

GENESEE COUNTY, MI -- The number of dog bites reported in the county soared 28 percent in 2012.
But officials say the numbers may not reflect an increase in the  number of dangerous dogs on the street.

Instead, those who track and treat dog bites said the numbers are more likely the result of better reporting by hospitals, urgent care offices and doctors after prompting by the state of Michigan.

The county Animal Control Department said dog bite reports increased from 580 in 2011 to 745 last year and reports increases in both the city of Flint and the rest of the county.

"I honestly think it's more reporting being done," said Animal Control Department Chief Officer Walt Rodabaugh. "I think what happened was (early in 2012), the Department of Agriculture sent letters advising" of the requirement that all bites be reported.

Lawyers Suing Epilepsy Doctor Can Use State Info

By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

The Michigan appeals court says lawyers under certain conditions can use information from the state about hundreds of people who were treated by an epilepsy doctor who's the target of malpractice suits.

The names were obtained by lawyers who are suing Dr. Yasser Awaad. He's accused of misdiagnosing epilepsy in children.

After a court order, the Michigan Department of Community Health released the names of Medicaid recipients who were treated by Awaad. The appeals court says that was improper without first getting the consent of patients.

The records must be destroyed, but lawyers can use information from people who know about the suit and already have responded to letters.

Awaad last year agreed to pay a $10,000 penalty to Michigan regulators and have future work reviewed by another doctor.

Slower than normal heart rate

Better Quality of Life from Lung-Sparing Mesothelioma Surgery

Posted on Thursday, March 07, 2013.

Mesothelioma patients who undergo pleurectomy/decortication (P/D) may enjoy a better quality of life afterward than those who have extrapleural pneumonectomy (EPP). That is the message of a new study published in the Asian Cardiovascular and Thoracic Annals.

Pleural mesothelioma arises most often in the thin lining that surrounds the lungs. Because of its close proximity to the lungs, it is not uncommon for pleural mesothelioma to eventually spread to the lung itself, reducing its function. Eventually, the diseased mesothelium also thickens and stiffens, preventing the lungs from expanding adequately with each breath.

Worker hurt escaping Roseville factory fire

Roseville — A welder was rushed to the hospital after escaping from an underground pit of flames Tuesday morning in an auto factory.

Interim Fire Chief Michael Holland said a fire broke out at about 11:40 a.m. while workers were welding items on a conveyor belt in a 30-foot-long pit at AZ Automotive Corporation on the 15200 block of Common.

The blaze blocked the escape for the worker in the pit as his coworkers tried to extinguish the fire while others called 911. Roseville firefighters arrived less than five minutes later to find that the man had managed to bolt through the flames.

The man was taken to St. John Macomb Hospital, where he was treated for smoke inhalation. His injuries are considered non-life threatening. Two others were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Holland said initial reports indicate there were massive quantities of oil in the pit, which could have started the fire. There were also other hazardous materials including gasoline.

"This was truly one of the worst kind of fires you can have," Holland said. "You have a fire in an industrial factory, a man trapped in a confined space and a building filled with hazardous materials."

Holland said the fire burned about 5 percent of building. It was extinguished in about 35 minutes.

Royal Oak home explosion victim identified; faulty gas line possible cause

DETROIT — The victim of a deadly and massive explosion that obliterated a Royal Oak home about 5 p.m. Wednesday has been identified as 58-year-old Daniel Malczynski.

Malczynski was alone in the home and no other serious injuries have been reported.

"First and foremost, our thoughts are with the deceased individual’s family, friends and loved ones," utility provider Consumers Energy said in a statement Thursday. "

Preliminary testing has determined that a gas service line to the house was damaged and was the possible cause of the explosion.

"However, the investigation is continuing under the supervision of the Michigan Public Service Commission. Consumers Energy is in the process of testing other gas services in the vicinity of the incident and is committed to assuring all of its facilities are safe and intact before restoring gas service to the area."

Whalen Furniture to Pay $725,000 Civil Penalty for Failing to Report Defective Children’s Beds

JANUARY 30, 2013 Release Number: 13-108
Toddler Died When Lid of Bed’s Toy Chest Fell on Him

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced today that Whalen Furniture Manufacturing Inc., d/b/a Bayside Furnishings, of San Diego, Calif., has agreed to pay a civil penalty of $725,000. The penalty agreement has been provisionally accepted by the Commission in a 3 to 0 vote.

The settlement agreement resolves CPSC staff allegations that the firm knowingly failed to report to CPSC immediately, as required by federal law, a defect involving two models of its boat-style children's beds with toy chests.  The two models included LaJolla boat beds and Pirates of the Caribbean twin trundle beds. The beds include a toy chest with a 20 lb. lid.  The lid supports on the toy chests fail to prevent the lid from closing too quickly, posing an entrapment and strangulation hazard to young children. Whalen sold the defective children's beds between January 2006 and May 2008.
