Drug case is stalled by conflict

A potential plea offer has put a monkey wrench in the preliminary exam for two women accused of selling synthetic marijuana containing a banned chemical.

Defense attorney Timothy Corr represents the women — Ronda Lee Roszak, 41, whom authorities said owns Smokers Depot on Lawson Drive in Genoa Township, and her manager, Melissa Ann Dzierwa, 27, of Fowlerville. Corr says there is no conflict of interest, but the judge and assistant prosecutor both say the potential plea offer means Corr cannot represent both defendants.

"They don't want a plea; there is no conflict," Corr told Livingston County District Judge L. Suzanne Geddis, who countered: "It becomes an ethical quagmire. You have confidential information from each and consulted with each."
