Big 2014 winter water damage increases need for environmental hygienists, reports mold expert

Mold consultant Phillip Fry reports that the severe 2014 winter water and mold damage to residences and commercial buildings increases the need for Certified Environmental Hygienists and Professional Industrial Hygienists in the USA, Canada, and Europe.

Doctors: Mold dampens health

In addition to the obvious flood damage – destroyed businesses, waterlogged homes, employees out of work – there’s another concern facing Manhattan residents and business owners.

Doctors Robin Thomson and Kellyn Milani of Trillium Integrative Medicine in Bozeman want people to know the dangers of mold toxin illnesses, especially after a catastrophic flood.

“It’s important to realize it only takes 48 hours of being damp to start microbial growth,” Thomson said. “That’s not long.”

That’s dangerous for about 24 percent of the population that cannot produce the proper antibodies to fight mold toxics. For those people, it only takes 10 minutes of coming into contact with mold spores to start what Milani calls an “inflammatory cascade” that leads to a mold toxin illness.

“The longer you’re exposed to mold, the worse it’s gonna get,” Thomson said. “It’s the sicker quicker phenomenon.”

Mold spores produce biotoxins that mix with bacteria, dust mites and other debris to form a “toxic soup.” Some people cannot get rid of the toxic soup and it produces a mold illness in susceptible patients.

Symptoms of such an illness include fatigue, weakness, muscle pain and cramps, headache, light sensitivity, blurred vision, sinus issues, dizziness, shortness of breath, abdominal pain, diarrhea, night sweats, memory problems, confusion, insomnia and increased thirst and urination.

Thomson said many of her patients come in saying they have been diagnosed with depression only to find out they are suffering from a mold toxin illness. In children, Attention Deficit Disorder is a common misdiagnosis for a mold problem.
