$200,000 Settlement: White brought suit for racial harassment

Black co-worker corroborated his claims

Plaintiff, a white male, worked in the laundry department at defendant Hurley Medical Center in Flint. Plaintiff testified that from October 2011 through February 2013, his African-American supervisor referred to him as “white boy” some 100 times. A black co-worker corroborated Plaintiff’s claim, and hospital documents showed that the hospital was aware of the discrimination.

Defendant argued that plaintiff never filed a complaint with the hospital about the alleged harassment prior to December 2012.

Plaintiff argued that he experienced mental anguish because of the supervisor’s racist treatment. He did not claim economic damages, and the case evaluators stressed that he was still working for the hospital. Plaintiff rejected the $82,500 case evaluation award.

The parties settled the case for $200,000.

Type of injuries: Mental anguish
Court/Case no./Date: Genesee County Circuit Court; 13-100083-CL; March 5, 2014
Settlement amount: $200,000
