2 in Michigan among 24 in U.S. ill in E. coli outbreak

The Michigan Department of Community Health said two people from the state are among a reported 24 people nationwide allegedly infected with Escherichia coli from frozen food products.

The department, along with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, U.S. Food and Drug Administration and others, are investigating the E. coli outbreak from patients who have reported eating Farm Rich products.

Farm Rich's parent company, Buffalo-based Rich Products Corp., issued a recall of several Farm Rich frozen products Thursday, including mini pizza slices, mini quesadillas with cheese and chicken, Philly cheese steaks with cheese and mozzarella bites.

Customers are advised check their freezer for the recalled products and those who've recently eaten any of these items are urged to see a doctor.

Symptoms of this strain of E coli include abdominal cramps and acute diarrhea, many times bloody diarrhea.
