1 motorist dead, 1 injured in wrong-way crash on I-96 in Detroit

Detroit — Michigan State Police believe alcohol may have been a factor in a fatal crash that closed westbound Interstate 96 early Thursday morning.

According to the MSP, a witness reported seeing a vehicle drive the wrong way on the freeway before it crashed into another vehicle and burst into flames.

According to Lt. Michael Shaw, the collision occurred at about 12:30 a.m. near the Southfield Freeway.

"Witnesses reported that a vehicle traveling eastbound in the westbound lanes of I-96 collided with a westbound vehicle," Shaw said in a release.

The driver of the EB vehicle traveling the wrong way was transported to Sinai-Grace Hospital in Detroit and is listed in critical condition. The driver of the WB vehicle was dead at the scene.
