Editorial: Broken EMS system endangers Detroiters
Poor management, inadequate maintenance of emergency medical services puts lives at risk; fixing it is a public safety issue
In Detroit, injured individuals are often taken to the hospital not in ambulances or other properly equipped emergency vehicles but in police patrol cars and Fire Department trucks. It happens too frequently in the city, especially when considering the life and death situations often involved. Why? Because an EMS unit was not available. Emergency medical is a basic public safety service the city must provide its residents.
